Odisha’s government announced a 100% exemption from motor vehicle tax (MV) and electric vehicle registration fees in an effort to encourage faster adoption.

“Using the powers conferred by clause (ii) of subsection (1) of section 15 of the #OdishaMotorVehiclesTaxationAct, 1975, the state government authorized a 100% exemption on the #MotorVehicleTax and the #RegistrationFees for EVs (sic), ”the state’s Department of Commerce and Transportation said in a tweet.

The exemption, granted under the Odisha Motor Vehicle Tax Act, is applicable until 2025.

In addition, the state government has proposed to expand a series of incentives for electric vehicle buyers, manufacturers, batteries and charging stations as part of Odisha’s electric vehicle policy.

Charging stations in Bhubaneswar

State government officials announced earlier last month that seven charging stations would soon be installed in Bhubaneswar, as the administration aims to have a solid infrastructure for electric vehicles throughout the city.

Priority over the selection of locations will be given to shopping malls, parking lots, hotels, residential complexes, workplaces and highways, they said.

In the first phase, seven charging stations at various locations in the city, including near the Kalinga Industrial Technology Institute and SUM Hospital, will be installed.

The state government announced the Odisha Electric Vehicle Policy 2021 earlier this year on September 2.

The goal of the policy is to achieve the adoption of 20% of electric vehicles of all car registrations by 2025 and to promote the manufacture of these vehicles and their components, including the battery, in the State. This is also aimed at facilitating innovation, research and development, “said Chief Secretary SC Mahapatra.

He said it is now necessary to reduce vehicle pollution and carbon emissions.

“It is high time to reduce emissions by limiting the use of vehicles that consume fossil fuels and by accelerating the rate of adoption of electric vehicles,” he said.

Various incentives will be available for electric vehicle manufacturing industries and for individuals to purchase, another official said.
