LA Rams activates OLB Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, waives DB JR Reed

The LA Rams have pledged to activate outside linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo for the Week 4 game against the Arizona Cardinals, and that’s exactly what they did today. The move offsets the impact of moving outside linebacker Justin Hollins to the injured reserve, where he is expected to stay for about 10 weeks. It is an important part of the 2021 NFL season that he will miss. Hopefully, Obo’s return to the active roster will help replace his production.

The news was reported by the LA Rams today as the team prepares for the Week 4 showdown with NFC West Division rival the Arizona Cardinals. Ahead of the news, the LA Rams were eyeing a tight rotation of Leonard Floyd, Terrell Lewis, rookie Chris Garrett and just signed waivers Jamir Jones.

Today’s report dramatically improved the outlook for the Rams Pass rush. Not only will the Rams activate Okoronkwo, but they will also be raising OLB Justin Lawler for this game. To complement the players activated for this game, the Rams also activated running back Buddy Howell for this game. He was activated for week 3 and saw some special teams action.

The Rams’ rapid rotation of passes from the rim seems to be very robust now. So robust that Chris Garrett’s early worries are not active for this game seem to be moot. In fact, the Rams could handle Week 4 with a simple rotation of Floyd, Obo, Lewis and Lawler and do just fine.

Of course, to add Obo to the 53-player roster, the Rams had to carve out a spot on the active roster. As we discussed in an article earlier in the week, the Rams were probably watching Travin Howard, JR Reed, or Tyler Hall. The team chose to forgo JR Reed today. But as discussed in this article, the Rams have a free spot on the practice squad, and I would be stunned if the Rams didn’t re-sign JR Reed to the practice squad as soon as he got the waivers.

How effective will Obo be when it debuts in week 4? He had a great training camp before his shoulder injury. Historically, it has been used in a rotational role. A big game would not only be a huge boost for the Rams’ defense in this one, but would be a huge advantage as he tries to gain playing time in the future.
