Google Voice and Fi temporarily waive call charges to Ukraine

Along with other answers, Google announcement tonight that its Voice VoIP service and Fi MVNO are waiving call charges to Ukraine. The company also provided an update on Project Shield protections.

Like other carriers over the past week, Google Fi has waived charges for international calls from Ukraine and from the United States to Ukraine. Google Voice also offers free calls with the following per minute Ukraine rates now $0.00 for personal Gmail accounts:

  • Ukraine-Kiev
  • Ukraine – Landline
  • Ukraine-Lvov
  • Ukraine-Mobile
  • Ukraine – Mobile – Astelit

Meanwhile, Google said it continues to “see DDoS attempts against many Ukrainian sites, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, as well as services like Liveuamap designed to help people find information”. His Project Shield service protects more than 150 websites in Ukraine. This includes news publications and humanitarian organizations, as well as Ukrainian government and embassy websites, according to the blog post updated today:

We’ve extended eligibility for Project Shield, our free protection against DDoS attacks, so Ukrainian government websites, embassies around the world, and other governments near the conflict can stay online, protect themselves, and carry on. to provide their essential services.

Google says it has “communicated its availability to Ukrainian government officials”.

The Play Store in Ukraine also highlights the Ukrainian Alarm (Повітряна тривога) so Android users can get the official air raid sirens on their phone:

This app was created by Ukrainian developers in cooperation with the Ukrainian government to give people better air raid warnings.

Google Cloud credits are being offered to humanitarian organizations, while the company is pledging $10 million to “organizations providing both immediate humanitarian relief and longer-term assistance to refugees in Poland.” It joins Google’s previous commitment of $15 million split between employee matching, direct grants and advertising credits.
