Fantasy Football week 9 wide receiver preview: waiver thread, showings, DFS games and more

Week 8 was frustrating for many new receivers. DeVonta Smith had his worst day as a pro, catching a single pass for 15 yards against the Lions. Kadarius Toney returned from injury to sustain another injury and underperform against the Chiefs at the same time. Jaylen Waddle caught just four of 12 targets for a 29-yard record against the Bills.

And I buy them all.

Smith still leads the Eagles with a 23% target share for the season. Week 8 was mostly the product of the team running all over the Lions and didn’t need to pitch. There’s nothing we’ve seen of these Eagles that suggests they’ll be able to do this on a regular basis. Jalen Hurts is expected to be back after more than 30 passing attempts this week against the Chargers and Smith is also expected to be a strong No.3 receiver.

As for Waddle, I’m just glad he had 12 targets. I’m not going to count for being woefully ineffective against Buffalo. Most wide receivers are. Most weeks, the Dolphins, like the Eagles, will struggle to lead the ball and Waddle looks stuck in more than 20 percent of targets for an improving Tua Tagovailoa.

Toney is of most concern, only because of all the injuries. But that has been fundamentally true for all of the Giants wide receivers. He’s certainly healthier than Sterling Shepard and Kenny Golladay right now. I would expect Toney to lead the Giants in targets in Week 9 and quite possibly the rest of the season.

Figures to know

  • 190 – Jakobi Meyers now has 190 career goals without touching down. He is three targets off Eric Bieniemy’s record of 193.
  • 34% – Deebo Samuel leads the NFL with a target share of 34%.
  • 20 – Cooper Kupp leads the NFL with 20 red zone targets. Chris Godwin is second at 15.
  • 5 – Mike Williams has five or fewer targets in three of his last four games. Another game like this and I’m going to get very nervous.
  • 10.7 – Hunter Renfrow has one game below 10.7 PPR Fantasy points this season.
  • 16% – Four different Broncos had a target 16% share in Jerry Jeudy’s opener. They’re going to need a lot more passing attempts for this to work.
  • 7 – Devante Parker has at least seven targets in every game he’s played this year.
