Channi government in Punjab betrayed farmers by breaking loan forgiveness promise: AAP

Congress pledged in 2017 to forgo the entire loan from ??90,000 crore of farmers and farm laborers, but the debt has now grown to ??1.5 lakh crore, says Aam Aadmi Party

Aam Aadmi Party MP and opposition leader Harpal Singh Cheema on Thursday denounced the Congressional government led by Charanjit Singh Channi in Punjab for “betraying the farmers” by failing to keep the party’s promise of a total waiver of the loan before the ballot.

Cheema said Congress pledged in writing on Jan. 19, 2017, to waive the entire loan of approximately ??90,000 crore of farmers and farm laborers, but their debt has now grown to ??1.5 lakh crore.

“This includes loans raised from the government, cooperative and private banks as well as the unorganized sector,” he told a press conference, recalling how the forms were filled out by farmers and workers.

The AAP leader asked CM Channi whether or not he would waive the entire loan. “If you do, then declare its deadline and the entire farmer and laborer loan should be canceled before the code of conduct is implemented in the state.” If the government cannot keep that promise, then all other things are just a hoax, ”he said.

At ??17,000 per acre of compensation announced by the state government to farmers for crops affected by pink bollworm, he asked the chief minister if this amount was enough to compensate farmers for damage to crops . “The farmers spent ??60,000 to 70,000 per acre, but the compensation amount is a travesty, ”he added.

Cheema warned the people, especially farmers, of the Punjab to beware of the hollow announcements by the Channi government, calling them “electoral stunts”.
