WADMALAW ISLAND — The 16-year-old boy charged with murder in a shooting on Wadmalaw Island will remain in custody while prosecutors determine whether he should be tried as an adult, officials said.

The teenager, who has not been publicly identified, was arrested on January 10. His case is still in family court.

In order to charge the 16-year-old as an adult, the office of 9th Circuit attorney Scarlett Wilson must file a motion for waiver asking a family court judge to transfer the case to the general sessions court — which they intend to do, Wilson said.

But the court case is still in its infancy, and Wilson said she doesn’t yet know if her office will actually seek the transfer.

Prosecutors won’t make a decision until they better understand the boy’s background – including his history of mental, educational and juvenile delinquency, Wilson said.

The 16-year-old had a detention hearing the day after his arrest and was returned to juvenile detention, Wilson said. Her next hearing will be on the afternoon of January 20, she said.

The teenager is the second person charged with homicide. Charleston County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Rashon Jerome Williams, 17, on January 10.

Under SC law, 17-year-olds charged with certain crimes, including murder, are automatically tried as adults.

He waived his right to a bail hearing, according to court records.

Williams and the 16-year-old are both being held in juvenile detention, said Charleston County Sheriff’s spokesman Andrew Knapp.

Authorities identify teenager who was shot and killed on Wadmalaw Island on January 5

The teenagers are accused of fatally shooting 17-year-old Zion Williams on January 5 outside a residence in Little Smith Road on Wadmalaw Island.

Knapp did not know if Rashon Williams was related to the victim, he said.

The Charleston County deputies arrived at the house near the Maybank Freeway and moved into dense woods around 8:30 a.m. the next morning, Knapp wrote in a news release.

They found Zion Williams in the yard, dead from a gunshot wound. Residents told deputies they had heard gunshots the previous night but did not report them then, Knapp said.

Information gathered as part of the Sheriff’s Office investigation showed that the two suspects traveled in a vehicle with the victim to Little Smith Road, where they exited, shot Zion Williams more than once , then left, Knapp said.

Man pleads guilty to 2017 Wadmalaw Island shooting and 2020 North Charleston fatal crash

Rashon Williams’ next court date is scheduled for March 4.

HATFIELD – The founders of a cannabis manufacturer that opened on Routes 5 and 10 in May 2020 are asking Hatfield town officials to consider removing the annual impact fee from its community hospitality agreement .

But Select Board members told Treeworks representatives on Tuesday they would need to get more information about how the company has affected city services before renegotiating the terms of the deal.

Having yet to receive a 3% impact fee payment, Chair Diana Szynal said her intention was not yet to reduce or adjust the arrangement, although she might be willing to do so. .

“Hatfield has been, I think, a great community to work with for our cannabis businesses,” Szynal said.

Treeworks co-founder Tim Kane said many communities are dropping impact fees because they don’t see negative impacts from cannabis manufacturers and retailers, even if it was a fear when signing agreements with host communities. His colleague, MacKae Freeland, said Treeworks is tucked away at 3 West St. and there has been no reliance on police or traffic details, as has been the case in other communities. .

In Northampton, former mayor David Narkiewcz announced in January 2021 that the city would stop collecting such mitigation fees, although this comes after the city had already secured $3.1 million in community impact fees on several years, calculated at 3% of annual gross income.

“I think what we’re trying to highlight here is that Treeworks itself doesn’t really have a negative impact, only a positive impact on the Municipality of Hatfield,” the co-founder said. Milo Childs Campolo. He said the company has hired more than a dozen people and supports other businesses in the city, such as RK Miles, the Smithsonian Chowderhouse restaurant and Waxwing.

Some board members, Edmund Jaworski and Brian Moriarty, both said they needed to find out about the company’s impacts from city departments.

“We need to internally get a little more information and do more research,” Moriarty said.

Board members have pledged to do so soon so that a decision can be made.

Before Northampton waived its impact fee, the city estimated it had spent around $1 million of that money on projects such as road repairs, such as near New England’s Conz Street location Treatment Access.

The NBA got off to a quick start in 2022 last week, and there’s another busy week ahead as we head into mid-January. It’s a slightly lighter schedule than last week as Monday only has seven games, and only Saturday has double-digit games on the schedule. For one-season leagues, you’ll want to stay aggressive and keep growing that roster as player availability and value continues to change. Since this is a relatively balanced schedule, you can be aggressive in improving your roster for any season’s leagues. Eighteen of the 30 teams play three times, with the remaining 12 teams each scheduled for four competitions. With several major injuries. with players logging in and out of protocols things are changing quickly by the day, so check out my Twitter account @ZT_sports if you are looking for streaming options for a single game, as well as DFS plays everyday.

At the top of this article every week, you can find the hottest mics, which are quickly fading from the waiver threads and are likely signed up in your league. If they are available, these are great options to consider. At the bottom of the article each week, you can find some deep league options that are worth considering if you’re trying to anticipate the rush or the other options aren’t available. In between these two groups, you can find four highlighted sleepers who I think are good mics and going in the right direction.

Top trending players

SF / PF Cedi Osman, The Cleveland Cavaliers (at SAC, UTA, SA, OKC)

The Cavaliers have an excellent four-game schedule this week, with favorable clashes against the Kings, Spurs and Thunder. Jazz will be tough, and the fact that they’re all road games makes them a bit tough, but it still sets up some good scenarios for Osman, who is barely listed in 10% of the leagues at this point after his upgrade. six-game footing in league health and safety protocols.

Osman came back from his absence on Friday and spent 30 minutes on the bench in Cleveland’s 13-point win over the Trail Blazers. He had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and added three rebounds and a steal. He has played at least 27 minutes in five of his last seven games and has scored at least 13 points in each of those games. Without Ricky Rubio on the ground, Osman produced 20 points, 3.4 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 3.7 3 points per 36 minutes. Since he’ll have to help carry the playing load with Rubio for the season, he should produce when the opportunity presents itself. Those chances should certainly present themselves this week with Isaac Okoro (elbow) sidelined and Lamar Stevens still in the starting lineup. Osman could either start Stevens again or remain critically involved as part of the Second Unit. Either way, her fantastic outlook for this week looks bright.

SF / PF Brandon Clarke, Memphis Grizzly (vs GSW, vs MIN, vs DAL)

Clarke is still available in over two-thirds of Fantasy Leagues and is starting to find a role more regularly involved with Memphis. While working in a larger role, he missed 11 games with knee pain. Since his return, however, he has played just under 20 minutes per game and has hit double-digit points in six of eight games, including five in a row. He doesn’t provide any 3-point advantage, but his score, rebounds, and blocked shots are definitely worth considering if you need a boost in the frontcourt. He’s tried at least nine shots in four in a row and should definitely be worth signing up if he stays involved to that degree.

His best game of the streak was on Saturday against the mowers. He recorded 28 minutes in that game partly because of Steven Adams’ absence (health protocols) and partly because of Dillon Brooks leaving with an ankle injury, which could prevent him from playing for some time. Clarke rose with 18 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. If Brooks is out there could be more work for Clarke, which would give her a very attractive edge.

SF Jordan Nwora, milwaukee dollars (to CHA, against GSW, against TOR)

The Bucks are shorthanded this week with Donte DiVincenzo (ankle) sidelined with injury while Jrue Holiday, Grayson Allen, George Hill and Pat Connaughton all start the week in NBA health and safety protocols. The Bucks also parted ways with DeMarcus Cousins, who was playing an important role, so there should be chances for Nwora after he approves the protocols himself and is ready to contribute again.

The sophomore has started all three of his games since returning from Protocols. He had 17 points, six rebounds and two assists against the Raptors and followed that up with 13 points and two rebounds against the Nets. On Saturday, he had just three points and three rebounds but still registered 31 minutes. He shot a dismal 1-for-11, but based on his pre-game 42.4% field goal percentage, he should bounce back well after a tough outing. With Milwaukee handling the workload of his stars and Nwora there to put on big games when given more runs, he should be a fantastic asset for the remainder of the regular season, especially since so many wing options are left out.

PF / C PJ Tucker, miami heat (at ATL, against ATL, against PHI)

With Bam Adebayo (thumb) and Dewayne Dedmon (knee) both still out due to injury, Tucker’s return to health and safety protocols has landed him a heavily involved role in the Heat rotation. He put in a monster double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds on Wednesday when he came back into the starting five. He also added six assists, one steal and one block playing 36 minutes.

This kind of monster game is not the norm at Tucker, but it can give you great scoreless production. In his six games before entering Protocols he had also managed to score, averaging 13.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 0.8 steals and scoring at least eight. points in each of these contests. He’s not a primary offensive option when Miami is healthy, but he’s a solid addition for the time being as Miami tries to figure out exactly what everyone’s role will be when they return to full force.

Prosecutors accepted the waiver and Judge Nancy Carniak said she would take the case to court for trial and a hearing would take place within the next two weeks to appoint a judge.

Crumbley, 15, is accused of opening fire on Oxford high school with a 9mm handgun on November 30, killing four students and injuring six others and a teacher. The attack some 40 miles north of downtown Detroit was the deadliest shootout at a U.S. K-12 campus since 2018.

Crumbley is charged as an adult with one count of terrorism causing death, four counts of first degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to kill and 12 counts of possession of a gun. fire during the commission of a crime.

On arraignment last month, the judge pleaded not guilty at the behest of Crumbley’s lawyer.

The students killed were Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; Hana St. Juliana, 14; and Justin Shilling, 17, authorities said.

During a preliminary examination, a judge should have decided – before sending the case to trial – whether prosecutors had probable reasons to show that a crime had been committed and that the accused had committed the crime.

Neither prosecutors nor Crumbley’s representatives explained during Friday’s proceedings why they wanted to waive the preliminary hearing.

On Friday, Carniak said Crumbley’s bail would be processed within the next two weeks, under new federal law.

The preliminary hearing was initially postponed last month after prosecutors said they needed more time to review a large amount of evidence before sharing it with defense attorneys.
Crumbley’s parents have also been charged in connection with the shooting. James and Jennifer Crumbley each face four counts of manslaughter and have pleaded not guilty, with prosecutors accusing them of giving him easy access to the gun and ignoring signs that he was a threat.

Jennifer and James Crumbley have a motions hearing scheduled for Friday afternoon where bail terms are expected to be discussed.

A disturbing timeline of events

The parents were held on bail of $ 500,000 each after their arrest on Dec. 4 following a manhunt that began when they failed to appear in court for their initial indictment.

In a timeline set in early December as to why Crumbley’s parents were charged, Oakland County District Attorney Karen McDonald said James Crumbley purchased the gun on November 26.

Parents of Michigan high school shooting suspect appear in court for manslaughter

The parents gave the gun to their son as an early Christmas present, the prosecutor said.

Ethan Crumbley “had full access to this gun,” and the parents “did not secure (the gun) and allow him free access,” McDonald said during the parents’ indictment on the 4th. December.

One of the parents’ attorneys, Shannon Smith, countered at the hearing, saying: “The gun was actually locked.”

“When the prosecution says this child had free access to a gun, that is absolutely not true,” Smith said.

McDonald alleged that the day before the shooting, an Oxford high school teacher saw Ethan Crumbley searching for ammunition online on his phone.

Michigan authorities execute search warrant at home of man accused of assisting parents of alleged school gunman

The teacher informed school officials, who contacted parents by phone and email, but they did not respond.

Jennifer Crumbley later texted Ethan saying, “LOL, I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught,” McDonald said.

On the day of the shooting, another teacher found a drawing on Crumbley’s desk that essentially depicted a shooting, McDonald said. It “alarmed her to the point that she took a picture of it on her cell phone,” the prosecutor said.

The photo led school officials to hold a meeting with the accused gunman and his parents, who were tasked with helping provide counseling to their son within 48 hours, school officials said. Parents resisted removing their son from school, McDonald said, and he was allowed to return to class.

Surveillance cameras captured the violence

School surveillance cameras captured much of the violence, prosecutors said.

Michigan school shooting could have been avoided given warning signs, prosecutor says
Just before 12:51 p.m. on the day of the shooting Ethan Crumbley could be seen with a backpack, and then a minute or two later walked out of a bathroom without a backpack but with a gun in his hand, Deputy District Attorney Marc Keast said at the Crumbley hearing. Deposit of December 1.

Crumbley then allegedly began “methodically and deliberately” pacing the halls, pointing a gun at the students and firing the gun, Keast said.

When the students began to flee, Crumbley reportedly continued down the hall at a “methodical pace” and shot inside classrooms and at students who had not escaped, Keast said.

This continued for another four or five minutes, and Crumbley eventually went to another bathroom, Keast said.

Dozens of terrified students called 911 during the shooting. When deputies arrived, the suspect dropped the gun and surrendered, officials said.

Prosecutors: Parents ignored signs their son was a threat

In a case filed last month, prosecutors alleged that Crumbley’s parents “deliberately ignored their son’s needs and well-being and the threat he posed to others.”

“The defendants were in a better position than anyone in the world to prevent this tragedy, but they did not,” the file said.

The filing, which came in response to a request from the Crumbleys for a modified bond, details how the couple were more than $ 11,000 in arrears on their house payments, sold their horses, and had “already shown that they s ‘would run away if they got the chance. ” The file also indicates that the parents had four cell phones at the time of their arrest and “attempted to destroy one of the phones.”

Parents of suspect who shot Michigan deliberately ignored signs that their son was a threat, prosecutors say

“Based on these facts, we firmly believe that the bond between James and Jennifer Crumbley has been properly established,” Oakland County Assistant Chief Attorney David Williams said in a statement.

The record further alleged that when the Crumbleys left their son’s school on November 30, before the shooting began, they knew their son was depressed and “fascinated by guns.” The file detailed Crumbley’s state of mind in the months leading up to the shooting, saying his parents knew he was “sadder than usual”.

As their son struggled, his parents spent several hours a night, three to four nights a week, in a barn looking after their horses and one of the parents was having extramarital affairs, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors also allege Ethan Crumbley tortured animals and kept a “baby bird’s head in a jar on his bedroom floor.”

“Instead of paying attention to their son and asking him for help, they bought him a gun,” the file says.

Top line

Novak Djokovic, No. 1 men’s tennis player, was waiting to enter Australia to compete in the Australian Open on Wednesday morning after being denied a visa by the Victoria state government in the middle of the controversy surrounding a vaccine exemption granted to him, the Age reported.

Highlights

Djokovic arrived in Australia at 11:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday but was refused entry because he had applied for a visa which does not authorize medical dispensations for vaccinations against Covid-19, Age reported, citing an anonymous source.

Jaala Pulford, Acting Minister for Sport of Australia, tweeted, “We will not be providing Novak Djokovic with individual assistance with visa applications” to participate in the 2022 Australian Open.

The best tennis player in the world noted On Tuesday, in a post on Instagram, he was heading to Melbourne “with an exemption permit”.

The Australian Border Force, which is trying to get the Victorian government to support Djokovic’s visa, may allow its entry at their discretion despite the refusal of the Victorian government to issue a visa, according to the Age.

It seems likely that he obtained the exemption either for a “positive PCR test result confirmed for the virus within the last six months” or for an “acute medical condition”, based on existing guidelines.

Chief critic

Australian lawmaker David Southwick, Victorian deputy liberal leader, tweeted, Djokovic’s vaccine exemption was a “disgrace” as the Victorian community suffered six lockdowns during the pandemic. Backlash against Djokovic’s vaccine exemption comes as Australian government has been accused of being more flexible with celebrities rich and famous, BBC noted. Tennis players wondered if Djokovic’s fame influenced his vaccine exemption. British tennis player Jamie Murray noted Tuesday, “I think if it was me who wasn’t vaccinated, I wouldn’t have an exemption.” Rod Laver, a great Australian tennis player, said Djokovic should reveal why he got a bye. “Yeah, you’re a great player and you’ve played and won so many tournaments so it can’t be physical,” Laver said, “So what’s the deal?”

What to watch out for

Djokovic, 34, will explain why he obtained a medical exemption to participate in the Australian Open. Acting Prime Minister Jacinta Allan noted On Wednesday, the government expects him to explain to the Victorian community why he got an exemption and explain “some of the motives behind his actions and intentions to play” in Australia. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison noted if the evidence presented by Djokovic regarding his vaccine exemption is “insufficient”, he would be “on the next plane home”, stressing that he would not receive special treatment.

Tangent

A total of 26 applications had been filed to seek medical exemptions from getting vaccinated for the Australian Open, according to Tennis Australia. But the number of exemptions granted was not immediately clear.

Key context

Djokovic has sparked controversy because of his stance on Covid vaccines. In April 2020, the Serbian athlete noted, “Personally, I am opposed to vaccination and I would not want to be forced by someone to be vaccinated in order to be able to travel. He did not disclose his vaccination status. Last month he took of of the ATP Cup in Australia, which raised doubts about his participation in the Australian Open. He was among 13 of Forbes’ 50 highest-paid athletes to refuse to say they had been vaccinated last year.

Large number

$ 34.5 million. That’s what he won in 2021, making him the 46th highest-paid athlete in the world, according to Forbes.

Federal officials will allow flexibility to meet new clinical trial cost coverage requirements for Medicaid registrants, seeking to accommodate states where legislatures do not meet in time to make necessary rule changes.

Congress in 2020 ordered U.S. states to have their Medicaid programs cover expenses related to participation in certain clinical trials, a move that has been hailed by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and others. groups like a trial boost as well as critically ill patients who have lower incomes.

The mandate went into effect Jan. 1, but the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will allow implementation time accommodations for states that have yet to be able to make the legislative changes. necessary, wrote Dan Tsai, director of Medicaid. , in a letter of December 7. Tsai’s letter does not mention specific states. CMS did not immediately respond to a request for information on which states should request exemptions.

Medicaid has been a rare US insurance program in recent years that does not cover the costs of clinical trials. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 made this coverage mandatory for people in private insurance plans. The federal government decided in 2000 that Medicare would.

“A hidden opportunity”

A perspective article last May in the New England Journal of Medicine called Medicaid’s new mandate for clinical trials a “hidden opportunity,” referring to its genesis as an addition to a massive federal spending program enacted in December 2020.

In the article, Samuel Takvorian, MD, MSHP, of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and his coauthors noted that participation rates in clinical trials remain low for racial and ethnic minority groups, in part to due to lack of Medicaid coverage.

“For example, non-Hispanic white patients are nearly twice as likely as black patients and three times as likely as Hispanic patients to enroll in cancer clinical trials – a gap that has widened over time. time, ”write Takvorian and his co-authors. “Inequalities in recruitment also manifested themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic, which disproportionately affected non-white patients, without their proportional representation in trials of COVID-19 therapies. “

In October, researchers at Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Ohio State University, Columbus published the results of a Retrospective study of stage I-IV patients pancreatic cancer who also found inequalities in registrations. Write in the Annals of Surgical Oncology, Mariam F. Eskander, MD, MPH, and the coauthors reported what they found by examining the charts of 1127 patients (0.4%) enrolled in clinical trials and 301,340 (99.6%) who did not register. They found that enrollment in trials increased over the study period, but not for black patients or patients on Medicaid.

Eskander said Medscape Medical News the new Medicaid policy will remove a major barrier to participation in clinical trials. Oncologist Eskander said she looked forward to helping more of her patients access experimental drugs and treatments.

But that may not be enough to attract more low-income people to these studies, said Eskander, who is now at Rutgers University. She urges greater use of patient navigators to help people on Medicaid understand the resources available to them, as well as wide use of Medicaid non-urgent medical transport (NEMT) benefits.

“Some patients will be offered to enroll in clinical trials and others will accept, but I’m really concerned about the challenges low-income people face with things like transportation and absence from work,” he said. she declared.

With elections at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) due to be held this year, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday announced full exemption from property tax bills on residential properties measuring up to 500 square feet in Mumbai. The Shiv Sena had promised to announce the waiver as part of its campaign pledge for the 2017 BMC election, in which it later became the largest party. The waiver will be effective from the new financial year.

“Shiv Sena kept many of his promises given in 2017. For Mumbaikars, I gave the promise after careful consideration. Today we keep this important promise. I promise Mumbaikars that we are able to take care of your health and well-being, just keep giving us your blessings, ”Thackeray said while announcing the decision in a virtual meeting of department officials. urban development Saturday.

He further instructed the state administration to ensure the immediate implementation of the decision. The meeting was attended by the ministers of Shiv Sena, Eknath Shinde and Aaditya Thackeray, the Minister of Congress Aslam Shaikh and senior officials of the state government and BMC.

IS Chahal, commissioner of BMC, said at the meeting that there are 16-14,000 residential properties under 500 square feet in Mumbai and that BMC will suffer an annual loss of revenue of Rs 462 crore due to the decision. The decision will also require amendments to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, the Maharashtra Education and Employment Guarantee (Cess) Act, 1962, and the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Preservation of Trees Act, 1975, he added. .

“The proposal will be submitted to the state cabinet to make the decision and make the appropriate changes to these laws. Then an order will be issued accordingly. It (the decision) will come into effect on April 1, 2022, for the 2022-2023 fiscal year, ”said Mahesh Pathak, Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department.

Following Shiv Sena’s victory in 2017, the BMC gave up the general tax component of property tax in 2019, urging critics to only partially keep its promise. The property tax consists of eight elements, including the general tax, the water tax, the sanitation tax, the education tax, the tree tax and the tax on water services, among others. The general tax represents about 10 to 30 percent of the total amount.

The question of a complete exemption from property tax was also raised by the opposition during the winter session of the state legislature. “Only the general tax on property tax bills has been abolished and not all of the property tax as promised by the then chief of Shiv Sena and CM Uddhav Thackeray,” said Devendra Fandavis, head of the opposition, adding that the state government should give it up. completely off.

Shinde, in the assembly, had said that the government is also of the same opinion and that a decision in this regard will be taken soon.

On Saturday, Shinde, the Minister of Urban Development, called the move revolutionary and a New Year’s gift to the people of Mumbai.

“It’s a revolutionary decision. No one dared to take such a decision not only in the state but also in the country. There is no need to tell anyone about the relationship between Mumbai and Shiv Sena. The Mumbaikars have always shown their love for Shiv Sena, ”said Shinde.

LANSING – A bill introduced by State Representative Greg Markkanen R-Hancock to help veterans use learned skills to excel professionally was signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday. The law will not only make it easier for qualified veterans to obtain a commercial driver’s license, but will also reduce the shortage of truck drivers in Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula.

House Bill 4787, now Public Act 148 of 2021, waives a knowledge test required for a person with military experience who applies for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in Michigan. CDL applicants must pass a skills and knowledge test.

Currently Michigan, like all other states, offers a skills test waiver for those with at least two years of experience driving heavy military vehicles.

Because the state had not previously waived the knowledge portion, it was unable to access a federal program in which 16 other states participate that made it easy for qualified drivers to obtain CDLs. The federal program is the Even-Exchange program.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) website, the federal program, known as the Even-Exchange program, allows qualified military drivers to be exempt from the knowledge test for obtaining a commercial driver’s license ( CDL).

When used with the Military Proficiency Test Waiver, the FMCSA website says, this allows a driver to exchange a military license for a CDL. Military personnel can use this proficiency test exemption if they are currently licensed and are or have been employed within the past year (12 months) in a military post requiring the operation of a motor vehicle. military equivalent to a commercial motor vehicle.

The Military Proficiency Test Waiver Program allows drivers with two years of experience in the safe operation of heavy military vehicles to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) without taking the driving test (proficiency test). This program is available in all states. To date, over 40,000 service members and veterans have taken advantage of this waiver program.

According to the FMCSA website, to qualify for the Military Skills Test Waiver, personnel and veterans must have one of the military occupational specialties or occupational classification below:

– The American army:

• 88M – Motorized transport operator

• 92F – Bar feeder

• 14T – Patriot launch station operator

– United States Marine Corps:

• 3531 – Motor vehicle driver

– US Navy:

• EO – Equipment operator

– US Air Force:

• 2TI – Vehicle driver

• 2FO – Refueller

• 3E2 – Operator of pavement and construction equipment

Military personnel may use the competency exam waiver if they are currently licensed and have or have been employed within the last year (12 months) at a military post requiring the conduct of a military motor vehicle equivalent to a commercial motor vehicle.

Markkanen said 40,000 military and veterans have benefited from this program across the country.

“This new law offers practical advantages, recognizes the experience of these people and allows Michigan to be competitive for workers,” he added. said Markkanen. “It will save our military, including those in the UP, time and hassle when they choose to enter this vital industry.”

Markkanen introduced HB 4787 on May 5, 2021. Although classified as a partisan bill, HB 4787 was passed by the House by 608-103 on December 14 and by the Senate 474-37.
